DNDi
Closer to neglected patients

Challenge

DNDi is a not-for-profit research and development organization, whose mission is to develop new drugs or new formulations of existing drugs for people living with neglected diseases such as leishmaniasis, human African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease etc.

Although these diseases account for 11% of the global disease burden, only a small percentage of therapeutic products are targeted to address them. This means that the poorest populations of the world, living in remote areas – which are the ones mostly affected by these diseases, have a really hard time accessing the right drugs.

DNDi’s work is therefore not only about science and research: it is about saving people’s lives.

Every year, DNDi produces an annual report, providing extensive coverage of the organization’s activities for the year. Blossom was asked to translate the complex, articulated technical content into effective storytelling, able to reach stakeholders and to enhance the organization’s impact.

Concept

DNDi’s annual report needed to achieve a double communication objective. On one hand, it needed to transmit the technical side of DNDi’s approach; on the other hand, it needed to bring out the human side of DNDi’s work.

Having to work within the brand’s existing identity, for the print version of the report we focused on revamping key graphic elements, such as icons, infographics and data visualizations to give the report a more contemporary and eye-catching garment, but mostly to easily guide the reader in navigating the report’s content. Indeed, we developed sets of icons identifying the main fields of DNDi’s activity (research, translation, development and implementation) as well as icons representing the various diseases dealt with by DNDi, altogether allowing for a simple categorization of the key R&D achievements.

For the digital version of the report, we focused on developing a content strategy able to present the report’s contents in a shorter and livelier way, giving a greater focus on patients and storytelling. The first section of the website offers key numbers and links to deepen the key R&D achievements of 2017 and an interactive map presenting the activities carried on throughout the various countries of the world. By scrolling down, the user’s attention is then drawn to individual stories, supported by multimedia contents such as videos, maps, timelines and external links.

Delivery

Blossom developed both the print and digital version of the report. For the digital version, we designed and developed the dedicated micro-site, focusing on an intuitive web architecture granting an effective UX / UI to explore the complex world of DNDi’s activities and achievements.
